John Griffin and Michael South – agents in the renegade counterterrorism agency Last Line, and closer than brothers. It’s a fast-lane life of danger and excitement. John loves every minute of it, but he’s facing one big problem now his feelings for Mike have flared up from friendship into a passion he can no longer hide. And Mike, although the bravest and best of partners, doesn’t feel the same.
Their one sexual encounter leaves them baffled and alienated from one another. Mike is a haunted man, shaken by flashbacks to his past life as an MI5 agent and a mission in Russia that went terribly wrong. He’s been left with a need for violence between the sheets, and John isn’t prepared to hurt him.
Not everyone has Mike’s best interests at heart. Their ruthless boss hires a ghost from Mike’s past to help track down a Russian war criminal who’s planted a nuclear device in the heart of London. Anzhel Mattvei knows all of Mike’s dark secrets, and soon regains his former sexual thraldom over him, leaving Mike locked in battle for his will and his soul.
Anzhel has turned Mike into a human detonation device. Only John’s love can pull him back from the brink – and save millions of lives in the fallout zone.

My Review:
This was a different book and I'm not even sure how to classify it. It had touches of paranormal and a lot of romantic suspense. It also seems like it was originally planned to be the start of a series because not all the mysteries were answered in the book. And I will warn you right now, there was some disturbing violence in the book.

Three years ago, Michael was undercover and was basically brainwashed and tortured and raped. He's been programmed although it was a bit unclear about how much the government knew about what happened to him. To Michael, he does not remember that time accurately...at all. What he does know now is that being with men sexually doesn't really work for him, although he still has the urge especially when it comes to his partner, John.

John is gay and completely in love with Michael, who he thinks is straight. He has no idea what happened to Michael when he was in MI5, until they are sent to apprehend a man that Michael knew from that time. Then Michael, mentally, begins to go off the rails.

The story is fascinating and bizarre. Michael has been completely programmed and has no control over so many of his actions. He's in love with John, but because of this mess, is breaking John's heart on a constant basis. It hurt to read...on so many levels, but especially for these two guys. It's definitely not an easy book to read.

But there are other aspects to the story that are on the more paranormal level and I have a feeling that those who had tortured Michael knew exactly what those paranormal abilities entail. Although Michael...and yes, John too (yes, they both have some sort of paranormal gifts that the bad guys appeared to be after)...had no idea what those hints at their abilities meant. There's definitely something more going on and I'm dying to know what exactly that all was. Like I said, it read like the beginning of a new series and I hope that's true and that there are more coming because I'd definitely read more about these two guys.

While the romantic story is wrapped up in this one, there are still lots of unanswered questions. I'm just hoping for more to come...

Last Line edition by Harper Fox Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Definitely an intense story, and makes me wonder if the author would consider a sequel. (ha! just found out she's making this into a series)

I enjoyed the gritty feel and parlay into the mind of the 'brainwashed'. Gives an introduction into a strange D/s relationship.

Very well done. The various scenes had me on the edge of my seat, and the introduction of the younger brother as well as some of the more paranormal aspects gave a feeling of other directions the author could go if she so chooses.

Loved the atmospheric quality of the countryside layout of the 'getaway'. It makes me want to take a roadttip to walk around the pastureland despite the sheepticks!

Thank you for an engrossing and pleasurable read, as always Ms. Harper.
I'm a big fan of Harper Fox's work. She writes men really well - in this man's opinion, at least. Her prose is elegant, her narrative fast-paced and vivid. She creates a sense of place - of many places - that brings the story alive. She is among the best at what she does.

This, of all her books I've read, was the most difficult to get into - not because it wasn't good, but because it was a harrowing experience. Nuclear terrorism, mind control, torture, gut-wrenching emotional betrayals. Oy. And yet her two central protagonists in this piece - John Griffin and Michael South - are no mere macho fantasy figures. John is very gay and into high style (and Michael). Michael seems to be closeted, but manages to be John's best friend (but that's way too simple). Michael is a mess, but even he doesn't know that until a ghost from his past triggers the unraveling of his carefully suppressed memories, threatening to destroy him and everything he loves.

There is a never-quite-explained undertone of unearthly power that runs through "Last Line." Somehow it merely added to the interest, and (I suspect) will be explored further in the sequel that will surely follow. The ending is satisfying and makes this book complete unto itself - except for the fact that I'd be very happy to see these two men - and John's teenage brother Quin - again soon.
I love Harper Fox's writing. Truly, I don't think she has an equal in this genre, though some other highly skilled writers come close. Her talent for plot, dialogue, emotional landscape, and steamy, explicit couplings (without being pornographic), is extraordinary. Some people do yoga to get centered, or paint, or hike. I have found that reading Harper Fox's work does that for me. All this said, everyone is human, and even adepts can make a misstep. There is a scene in this book that could easily be a trigger for anyone who has survived sexual violence or physical abuse. Although the book description suggested a dark side to the tale (a character who liked rough sex and had been in sexual thralldom), it did not explicitly warn readers. SPOILER ALERT STOP HERE. If I had known there was a rape scene written to have a titillating edge, and especially that the victim was so deluded as to think he was consenting what was happening to him, I would never have purchased the book. A secondary point - vague supernatural elements are introduced at the end of the book without any foundation or explanation. Yet I had to rate the writing as "great" because except for the primary flaw, this was still Harper Fox doing what she does best - writing. I recommend reading everything else Ms. Fox has penned, but not this one. (I haven't read the sequel and will not.)
